Linnea Rydén, Vice President of the Uppsala Student Union, summarizes yesterday's General Council on behalf of the Board:
On Thursday evening, Uppsala Student Union's council members gathered in the Betty Pettersson Hall at Blåsenhus to participate in the first council meeting of the semester. The meeting started with a short introduction to the union and the council body, which was held by the chairman of the council Elenor Söderberg, with some assistance from the secretary of the council Ebba Wahlin.
The General Council, or FUM, decided, among other things, on the election of club masters and vice masters, section board representatives, and politically elected board representatives. The agenda also included the election of new members to the Ubbo Foundation Board, where two new members were elected. The meeting did not succeed in electing auditors, an archivist or a historiographer, and these positions can still be applied for via the union's website.
In addition to election matters, decisions on the detailed budget were on the agenda. Union President Anton Sánchez Sulejmani presented the Board's reasoning on the budget, and then opened up for questions. Among other things, it was mentioned that the estimated deficit can be partly attributed to the renovation of the student union building. The General Council then decided to adopt the detailed budget, with an additional directive to instruct the Board to present a balanced budget at the February General Council meeting.
It was then time for the Board and the sections to report on their activities in recent months, after which representatives from the Board and the respective sections updated the meeting on what had happened since last time.
Last on the agenda was a brief information item on the union's anniversary celebrations, which will take place in March 2024. The President of the General Council then closed the meeting, and the members could once again go out into the warm September evening.

The Angiveri Act is unacceptable
Since the publication of the Tidö Agreement, opposition to the reporting obligation included among its points has only grown. For public sector workers in fields ranging from healthcare to libraries, the duty to report is tantamount to a whistleblower law whereby one's profession contributes to the vulnerability of undocumented migrants. In the following post, Uppsala Student Union and our sections comment on the duty to report and its consequences for the students we represent.
Statement on the government's decision on the boards of higher education institutions
Uppsala Student Union and the Doctoral Board at Uppsala University are writing to urge the government to reverse its decision to increase political control over university boards. The government must restore the term of office to three years and make it clear that they intend to return to the system where daily political issues do not control the selection of university board members. Academic freedom requires freedom from political control as well as trust between academia and those in power. The measures now decided by the government threaten both of these values.
