Sweden's oldest student union

In 1849, Uppsala Student Union was founded by the thirteen student nations' cooperative body, the Convention of Curators. What is today's student union, with student social and trade union work, is something that grew during the period from the start of the First World War, 1914, to the early fifties. Since then, the activities have had a changing appearance but the content has basically been the same. The union's own premises in the Ubbo block were opened in 1966. Before that, the union rented premises in various places in the city, such as the nations and ordinary offices.

Housing

During the interwar period, the student union began to build student housing at Övre Slottsgatan 5 ("Gubbhyllan", 1931, now a hotel), Skolgatan ("Klosettpalatset", 1936, now a hotel) and St. Johannesgatan 19 ("Parthenon", 1941, now owned by Kalmar nation). With the large influx of students in the post-war period, the student union began to build its own neighborhoods. The Student Union's own housing foundation, Stiftelsen Studentstaden i Uppsala, built neighborhoods such as Gamla Studentstaden, Flogsta, Rackarberget and Kantorsgatan between 1950 and 1975. The Student Union Foundation has shaped today's cityscape in Uppsala. Due to poor finances and large rent losses, the student union was forced to sell the entire foundation and all its housing at the end of 1994. the union therefore no longer has its own property portfolio, apart from the student union building in the Ubbo block.
