      Uppsala Student Union today releases a follow-up to the Lecturer-led time from a student perspective. The report aims to follow up on the survey on teacher-led teaching at Uppsala University since last year's report on teacher-led time and keep alive the issue of resource allocation in higher education. Uppsala Student Union hopes that the results will contribute to a continued discussion on the quality of higher education in Sweden and the importance of the meeting between teacher and student to ensure a research-based education.

      The results of the survey show that the majority of faculties, five out of six (5 out of 6), have less than five hours of teaching time per week. The amount of teacher-supervised time is relatively similar in faculties that offer education in the humanities, theology, law and social sciences (HSTJ). The Faculties of Social Sciences, Education, Theology, Linguistics and Faculty of Arts have an average of 4.66 hours of teaching time per week. The programs at the Faculty of Medicine have more teaching time than the other faculties. Regarding seminars, it is noted that the proportion of teacher-led time varies between faculties. The Faculties of Linguistics, Medicine and Education have an average of over two hours of seminar per week, while the Faculties of Theology, History and Philosophy and Social Sciences all have less than two hours of seminar per week with an average of 1.16 hours of seminar per week.

      Uppsala Student Union released a new report on teacher time in 2022 which compared the proportion of teacher time with the report released in 2009. This report compares the results with the 2022 report. Teacher time had mainly increased at Faculty of Arts, as it has also done in this year's survey. It had increased from 3.56 hours per week to 4.31 and this year it has also made a small increase from 4.31 to 4.41. Despite the small increase, Faculty of Arts is this year the faculty with the least average teaching time. The Faculty of Education, which last year had made a significant reduction in teacher-led time from 6.3 hours per week in 2009 to 4.8, remains at the same level this year with 4.88 teacher-led hours per week. The Faculty of Medicine, which last year was the faculty with the most teaching time with an average of 9.65 teaching hours, has this year increased its teaching time by almost one hour per week. This translates into 10.42 hours of tutor time per week, which is more than double the amount of tutor time offered at the other faculties for which Uppsala Student Union has union status.

      What does Uppsala Student Union want?

      Uppsala Student Union believes that an adequate amount of teacher-led time must be provided for students to benefit from the training. There should be a consensus within the institution that all courses should offer basic interaction with a teacher to promote learning and provide a good introduction to university-level studies.

      Uppsala Student Union would therefore like to:

      ... all students should be offered at least 10 hours of teacher-led instruction per week.

      ... long-term investments will be made to ensure sustainable financing of education over time.

      ... the resource allocation system at undergraduate and postgraduate level is reviewed to meet the increased costs for higher education institutions.

      Report release: Do the placement guidelines need to be re-plastered?

      Uppsala Student Union today released a report on the clinical placement guidelines at the Faculty of Medicine. The purpose of the report is to present the guidelines and reimbursement models used by different programs at the Faculty of Medicine at Uppsala University in the management of costs that may arise for students in connection with their clinical training. This refers, for example, to travel costs and costs for accommodation when students have a clinical placement in a location other than Uppsala. Uppsala Student Union hopes that the report will contribute to a continued discussion on the conditions for equal and inclusive higher education in Sweden. Such a discussion is an important step in the work to ensure that anyone with the right qualifications has the opportunity to study, regardless of socio-economic background.
