Welcome to a lecture by the 2026 honorary doctor of educational sciences.

Agnès van Zanten, honorary doctor of the Faculty of Educational Sciences, is professor emerita at the Centre de recherche sur les inégalités sociales (Center for Research on Social Inequalities) at SciencesPo, Paris. The title of her lecture is "Take a chance on me!": From the promise of equality of educational opportunity for all to incentivizing individual students' self-marketing for scarce opportunities.

The lecture will highlight the latest significant changes in how educational opportunities are understood and designed – both by decision-makers and educational institutions – and how they are perceived and implemented in practice by students. Based on two qualitative studies on access to higher education and efforts to broaden recruitment at French universities, the lecture will analyze current policies and institutional discourses and tools, as well as the perspectives and experiences of female and male students from different social and ethno-racial backgrounds.
