What is the Social Sciences Section?

The Social Sciences Section is one of Uppsala Student Union's four sections, and operates at the Faculty of Social Sciences at Uppsala University. The sections aim to bring the union's activities closer to the students and thereby make it easier for students to influence the situation on their particular campus, department or faculty.

The Section for Social Sciences, or SamSek, is located in the Uppsala Student Union premises at Övre Slottsgatan 7, and represents students at the Faculty of Social Sciences, which means students at the university campuses Ekonomikum, Blåsenhus, Gamla torget, Engelska parken and Biomedicinsk Centrum (BMC). The section covers all students studying at any of the following departments:

- Department of Psychology

- Department of Sociology

- Department of Social Work

- Institute for Russia and Eurasia Studies

- Department of Peace and Conflict Research

- Department of Political Science

- Department of Nutritional Sciences

- Department of Informatics and Media

- Department of Human Geography

One of SamSek's main tasks is to ensure student representation, i.e. to appoint students to all decision-making or advisory bodies within its institutions. The section also works with work environment issues on campus for the students we represent.

The Section also contains a number of Union Associations which are central to the Section's activities. The student unions are often linked to specific programs or departments, and offer students a wide range of activities to get involved in, ranging from issues related to education, study social activities and working life for the student group. The section's task is to coordinate and engage the student unions in their own, the section's and the union's activities, and to support them in developing their own work. The section's Union Associations are central to the section's activities, and much of the section's work is done in collaboration with these associations. Section Council of the Social Sciences Section

The Section Council is the highest decision-making body of the Social Sciences Section. The members of the Council consist of representatives from the section's associations. The task of the members is to represent students in the section in decisions on student representatives and allocation of the section's financial resources. The section council also discusses current issues within the student union associations and within the programs they represent. This is done through regular meetings and section-wide events. Study monitoring

Student monitoring is one of the most important tasks of the Student Union. As the name suggests, it is about monitoring studies, more specifically ensuring that the students' situation at the university is acceptable. At Uppsala Student Union , there are two faculty coordinators who work full-time with student influence and advocacy work towards the university. The faculty coordinators are tasked with checking that education within the section's area of activity is of good quality and that the university follows the rules and guidelines that exist. You can, for example, turn to the faculty coordinators in matters relating to student influence and the quality of your education.
